Our take? Either the NMPA data isn’t very representative, or Amazon Prime is doing a lot of heavy lifting. While Spotify leads Apple Music by nearly 12 million paid customers, Amazon Music lags behind Apple Music by a mere 3.3 million subscribers. Perhaps most surprising, however, is where Amazon ranks. The same data shows YouTube Music and Pandora Radio capturing 8.5 million and 2.4 million paying customers, respectively.

Can you imagine how unfair Spotify would claim the business was if Apple were in the lead? For comparison, Apple Music accounts for 32.6 million paid music subscription customers in the US. The data represents the total number of subscribers to each music service in the US during February 2023. MBW cites data recently shared by the National Music Publishers Association that claims to break down how various streaming music services perform in the US. This understanding helps to ensure we give important functions such as the “New Note” button or the “Selected Note” a bright and bold colour, to emphasise it and establish it as a frequently used part of interface.While there isn’t much insight into how the streaming music wars are playing out, a new report from Music Business Worldwide hopes to share some perspective.

When using color in any form of design it is important to consider many factors, such as visual hierarchy, emphasis, relationships, meaning and balance across the whole interface. These worked okay with the skeuomorphic environment we had created, but as we began to add more functionality – interactive widgets, automated dashboards and reports – we began to realize our color combinations needed adjusting to allow users to focus on their tasks rather than their environment. Our early interface iterations used dark and muddy colors with many gradients and shadows. Selecting the right colors for your brand’s identity, website or app can be a frustrating exercise. And with big implications, it needs to be considered carefully. Color is powerful. It evokes emotion, captures attention and helps to communicate a message.
